Villa Savoye "Les Heures Claires"

Year: 1928 / Place: Poissy, France

The landscape surrounding Poissy offered places of privileged vacationing along the Seine, very popular with the bourgeoisie. Mr. and Mrs. Savoye would naturally be won over when the opportunity presented itself to buy there a vast estate of seven hectares from one of their insured (1). The qualities of this terrain distinguished it from the properties on the edge of the Seine, which were sometimes on the northern side of a hill and plunged into shadow in the winter. Here on the hill of Beau Regard, we look over the wide meanders of the river. At the limits of this little plateau, bordered by oaks and pines, a vast prairie in a gentle slope receives the villa, this white solitary cube addressing the horizon while reaching toward the sky, “without disturbing anything” (2).
